The Travels of Andy and Lisa
The Indefatigable anchored a few thousand miles north of Palmyra...
Mid-March 2008 the sailboat Indefatigable showed up at Palmyra. On board were
a couple of vagabonds/sea gypsies – Andy and Lisa – hailing from were wherever
their floating home happens to be at the time. They’d just spent the last 8 days
sailing from Hawaii in boisterous trade-wind conditions and were mighty happy to
slip into the quiet lagoon where the boat could finally come to rest on an
even keel, their six hour watch schedule could end, and life would be idyllic
again.
Andy & Lisa have been wandering around the Pacific for well over a decade
in a sort of controlled-drift. Their wanderings have taken them from Alaska, the
closest place to call home for them, as far southeast as Mexico, as far south
as New Zealand, as far West as Japan, and as far north as the Aleutian islands,
the Alaska Peninsula and Kodiak. Throughout the years they’ve circled and
zigged and zagged around and across the Pacific, plunking their home down
wherever they could find a good anchorage.
They’ve come to love the lifestyle and the freedom that comes with it.
“For us it’s more about simply moving our floating home from place to place than
about being on some kind of tourist thing. We like to think that we actually live
wherever our boat settles; we’re not just there to see the sights,” said Andy.
One of the freedoms they enjoy so much is the freedom from having to
work at a job all the time to make ends meet. Their philosophy is that it’s not how
much you earn that makes you wealthy, but how long you can live on what you
have, and how much of life you can really live along the way. The philosophy is
outlined in detail, along with stories acquired in their wanderings, in a book
recently released titled: “The Best Life Money Can’t Buy” by Andy Deering
(available via most online booksellers).
“We’ve had a great stay at Palmyra, and can’t thank the Nature
Conservancy staff enough for all their kindness and hospitality,” they said. Their
next stops include remote islands in the Kiribati, Wallis, Fiji, New Caledonia,
Vanuatu, and Australia – or wherever their drifting happens to land them.

Hi Mike, Sorry it's been a long
time between contacts. Internet
has been few and far between
lately. Hey, we finally got a chance
"Andy & Lisa" on your web site!
Thanks so much!!!
We're currently in Fiji and still
heading slowly west-southwest.
Hope to be in Vanuatu in a week or
two. All's well and life is good as I
hope it is with you. Any word on
whether you'll be heading back to
Palmyra? How's the construction
business? Any new and exciting
prospects? I'll write more soon,
I'd better send this before I lose
my connection as it's a pretty
shaky one. More later. Until then,
Fair Winds and Take Care,
Andy (and Lisa)
