As with any facility the encampment on Cooper Island
(owned by TNC) is no exception to needed regular
maintenance. A regular routine of work is required to
maintain these facilities. TNC has used a number of
resource people from volunteers to hires to cover
various rolls from cooks, mechanical, carpentry and
general upkeep of this jewel of the South Pacific.
Palmyra in a harsh environment in which even plastic
is destroyed by this salty sea ecosystem. Selecting
materials for use here can either mean a short life
cycle or a longer life dependent upon products used
and installation practices employed This addition of
the Gazette will try to describe this environment and
provide content for construction detailing that might
service the Cooper Camp in general while providing a
history of what has been done and possible future
projects or materials best suited for use on Palmyra.

Former Generator Building Relocated for use as the "New England Farm Tractor Shed"
|
Even small projects requires planning and thought
especially concerning safety on the remote atoll.
Temporary framing had to be installed for support
inside the shed in order to use the forks on the JD. A
wood beam seen in the AVI movie was created to keep
the building from resting on the exposed hoses on the
lift frame of the JD. The former generator shed was
moved to it's new location on the camp proper along
side the Scuba Shack. With Wills help, the building
was transported to it's current location. Reusing the
building saved on valuable resources on the atoll and
minimized the accumulation of unwanted debre. I
added some left over T111 to finish the exterior.
Dennis painted the siding. Electricity was run to the
building providing a central location for a power point
in the area. The project was 90% completed with a few
odds and ends left to be completed by the replacement
crew.
The coca cola can still
un-opened I found drifted
with some soda still in it!
Failure to the paint on the old WWll concrete floor. Areas of the floor, the
paint soon lifted creating a mess. The water based floor patch also failed
in places.
RECOMMENDED: Using a thinnest concrete base (ceramic tile) floor
patch is recommended. Adding a bonding agent will help ashore a good
bond. An epoxy paint will last longer, applied to these old floors. Not all
products are well suited for the Palmyra environment. Careful selections
should be made. Knowledgeable staff helps promote system success.
A number of considerations were made for Palmyra including a nuclear waist dump among
one of the proposals put forth. Microsoft's Bill Gates also entertained the idea of purchasing
the atoll for his private use! Watch for upcoming updates!!!
